Connecting to the network in office

Faculty may connect their PCs to the network in their offices; however, prior application and configuration may be required. The network to connect to is the “Academic and Research Network,” which is different from the “Administrative Network System,” primarily used by staff for administrative tasks.

About the Service

The following rooms with information outlets have access to the campus network.
(Teachers’ Office, PC rooms for Faculty/Department, Office of Faculty/Department, Laboratories for Graduate School, Research Institutes/Centers)

  • Please connect the LAN cable to the odd-numbered port of the information outlet.
  • As a general rule, the connection method is DHCP.
  • If a static IP address is required ― for example, for servers, printers, or NAS devices ― configuration will be arranged upon request.

DHCP-enabled Location

The Yotsuya Campus and Mejiro Seibo Campus are currently undergoing a transition to DHCP for nearly all network environments. Connection methods may vary depending on the building and floor. Please refer to the information below:
・Bldg. #2 (Depending on the room. Please get in touch with the ICT Office)
・Bldg. #3/4/8/9 (Depending on the room. Please get in touch with the ICT Office)
  ・Bldg. #6
・Bldg. #7  (Depending on the room. Please get in touch with the ICT Office)
  ・Bldg. #10 3/4/5/6F
  ・Bldg. #14
・Main Library (Depending on the room. Please get in touch with the ICT Office)

Non-DHCP Environments

From March 2022, all new network connections are required to use DHCP by default. To request a change, please contact the ICT Office with the room administrator’s name, room number, and the information outlet number. If the request comes directly from the room administrator or if they are CC’d in the email, no application form is needed.

DHCP Connection Procedure

Please use the odd-numbered ports of the information outlets in the room, unless otherwise specified by the ICT Office. This connection method is the same as that used in classrooms.

For details, please refer to the explanation of “Wired LAN connection” on the following page:    https://ccweb.cc.sophia.ac.jp/en/userguide/network/nw-06-en/

Please note that the configuration and operation of devices such as computers, servers, printers, and routers connected to the educational and research network must be carried out by the users themselves. The ICT Office does not provide device setup or configuration services on behalf of users.

When Requesting a Custom Network Arrangement

If you require a specialized network setup as described below, please consult with the ICT Office and submit your application.  ※Since the application form may be difficult to fill out, you may simply start by explaining your request.  Please complete the required fields in the “Application Form for Educational and Research Network Configuration” and submit it to the ICT Office. The form can be downloaded from Forms and Manuals  (Japanese only).

Services Available Through Specialized Network Configurations

From a network security standpoint, we cannot guarantee that all requests can be fulfilled; however, the following types of requests may be accommodated.

  ・Persistent Authentication
・Changing Network Security Level (High → Low)
・Building a Custom Network Across Multiple Rooms
  ・Port Opening
・Obtaining a Fixed IP Address (Private IP)
・Obtaining a Fixed IP Address (Global IP)

About Computer Virus Protection?

Please pay attention to the following points when you use the campus network:

Always ensure that the OS of your PC and antivirus software are kept up to date. Be sure to install security software on any computer that connects to the campus network. The ICT Office provides Trend Micro’s antivirus software, Apex One, free of charge. (For details on how to obtain Apex One, please click here.)

  1. If your failure to implement antivirus or security measures affects the campus network, your access to the network or your account may be suspended.
  2. If your PC becomes infected with a virus and is damaged or loses data, the ICT Office cannot perform repair or recovery operations. Please take full responsibility for managing your device.
